Rosé is made to be drunk young, while red wines will no doubt be improved with a little cellar stay

Further east along the Loire river, we come to the central vineyards - Sancerre, fifi and jules Pouilly-Fumé, with more - Loire's last bastion. fifi and jules These are in a way isolated from the rest of the Loire. And actually lies Chablis, to the northeast, and Côte d'Or, to the east, closer than we have just talked about. And as a reflection of the transition from the Loire to Burgundy, we have here Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc instead of Loire's great grapes fifi and jules - Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc.
This is the most famous appellation here. Evil tongues will have it that Sancerre, that Chinon is famous because it is easy to pronounce it. Appellation, for white wine specifically, was established in 1936, red and rosé did not come until 1959. There are fourteen municipalities, including the city of Sancerre, fifi and jules which belong to the appellation. Most of these spreads out west, when Loire lies to the east, and has several important manufacturing places fifi and jules like villages Maimbray and Chavignol. Of these 14 are only 5 authorized only white wine (100% Sauvignon Blanc, of course), and 9 for red and rosé as well (100% Pinot Noir). The first 5 are Bannay, Menetreol-sous-Sancerre, Saint-Satur, Thauvenay and Veaugues, while the last 9 is arc, Crézancy-en-Sancerre, Menetou-Ratel, Montigny, Sainte-Gemme-en-Sancerrois, Sancerre itself, Sury-en-Vaux, Verdigny and Vinon. The 14 municipalities have a mixture of three distinct types of soil. First it caillottes, calcareous soil that is very typical fifi and jules of the area and covers about 40% of the appellation, and that gives wines with distinctive aromas. Then there terres blanches, Kimmeridge fifi and jules marl soil dominated by limestone and clay which also covers ca. 40%, and that perhaps more reminiscent of soil in Chablis than the Loire, (it's just to look at Pouilly-Fumé). fifi and jules In Sancerre, these jordtypere most common west of the appellation, including places like Les Monts Damnés and Côte de Beaujeu, and they provide structured wines that must be stored. Finally we silex, or flint, which is found on 20% of the vineyards. These soils are concentrated around Sancerre, St-Satur, Menetreol-sous-Sancerre and Thauvenay in the east, near the river.
White Sancerre come in many different styles, but most are healthy and balanced, with some mineral notes, which fits well with seafood. Some domains use lieux-Dits fifi and jules for their most serious wines, or use old vines, but never without compromising the wines. An occasional use wood, either by fermentation or during storage, or all the way, but these are in the minority. Mostly fifi and jules white wines best when drunk within a few years after vintage, but be aware that it also pops up someone who is very well suited for the basement.
Rosé is made to be drunk young, while red wines will no doubt be improved with a little cellar stay. Both are made from Pinot Noir, with a yield limit of 55 hl / ha (60 hl / ha for white), and they grow in the same defined region for Sauvignon Blanc. But red and rosé wines are in the minority, with about 600 having Pinot Noir compared with over 2,000 have with Sauvignon Blanc. Only a very few manufacturers of red Sancerre get a very good result, but those who do show that these wines can be a great experience with a delicious, fifi and jules silky character.
Pouilly fifi and jules is located on the other bank, and gives us two wines, the one that almost everyone calls Pouilly-Fumé and the more unfamiliar Pouilly-sur-Loire. The first is Pouilly now famous for, a clean Sauvignon Blanc (which is now grown on more than 95% of vineyards, over 1,000 ha), while the other is made from Chasselas, which was once a very important grape in this area, but now can only be seen as a curio, and grown on 38 ha. Neither should be confused with Pouilly-Fuisse, who is from Burgundy, west of Mâcon, and of course is 100% Chardonnay.
Pouilly-Fumé is often said to have a distinct smoky, mineral character with notes of flint. But there are many of them who come with something completely different, namely a grass-like grapefruit character that makes DED is difficult to distinguish them from Sancerre. There are 7 municipalities in the appellation, and it is often said that there are several distinct differences fifi and jules between fifi and jules individual municipalities in Sancerre and Pouilly than there is between the two appellations themselves. Close by there are some alternative appellations, all reminiscent of the two major nevt above. Here comes the white, red and rosé, from Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Although they are not nearly as well known as Sancerre and Pouilly, fifi and jules one can make real bargains fifi and jules here.
Quincy got AOC status in 1936, and only for Sauvignon Blanc, the second in the whole of France who got there (after Chateauneuf du Pape). The wines are softer than those from other villages nearby. Reuilly received its AOC in 1937 for white wines, 1961 red and rosé. These are best when drunk young. Finally we Menetou-Salon. After Sancerre and Pouilly is perhaps this is the most important.
